Research Activities in the Space-DREAM Project
We use oxygen to produce energy, and in this process, it is known that a few percent of the oxygen used is converted to highly reactive oxygen, namely "reactive oxygen species (ROS)". ROS are highly reactive, damaging genes and destroying protein structures by oxidation. Since the existence of ROS is dangerous to the living body, there is an "antioxidant system" in our body to remove and detoxify ROS. This system continuously reduces ROS generated in the process of energy production. Our body is under the balance between the generation of ROS and its removal by the antioxidant system. It has become clear that this imbalance is significantly related to lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes.
In the Doshisha Space-DREAM Project, I am interested in the balance of ROS / antioxidant systems in outer space. In outer space, humans are exposed to a large amount of radiation that produces ROS, and weightless space may also be thought to affect this balance. So far, we have identified several " biomarkers of oxidative stress," that indicate the injury caused by ROS. By evaluating using biomarkers of oxidative stress, we would like to deeply understand damage induced by ROS in outer space and establish a way to prevent this disorder.
Profile
Born in Furukawa, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, I entered the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hokkaido University. I started to research in the Hygienic Chemistry Laboratory about ROS / antioxidant system, which is also the current research subject. After obtaining a Ph.D. from Hokkaido University, I explored biomarkers of oxidative stress as a researcher at the Kansai Center of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). After that, I moved to Doshisha University in line with the establishment of the Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences. Since 2018, I have been researching at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku University.
I learned kendo from elementary school to high school and working members of society, and in 2016, I got a license of 4-dan in kendo. When I was in university, I belonged to the American football club and played the Guard position of the offensive line. There is something in common between sports and research, which is "work hard". I am conducting research activities, keeping precious what I learned in sports.
